Biography

Louisiana State Representative Ken Brass, a native of St. James Parish, graduated from Southern University with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics. Representative Brass is employed at BASF Corporation in Geismar and currently serves as an Electrical Maintenance Engineer in the Power Distribution Group.

Over the past 20 years, Representative Brass has been a dedicated public servant and has “Made A Difference” in our community. In 2002, Representative Brass was elected as one of the youngest ever to serve as an Alderman for the Town of Lutcher. In 2007, Representative Brass was elected to serve as the 6th District Councilman on the St. James Parish Council, where he served for a total of 10 years. Representative Brass served the last two years of his tenure on the St. James Parish Council as the Vice Chairman. In 2017, Representative Brass decided to step out on faith and run for the vacated Louisiana State Representative District 58 seat. Representative Brass was elected in the first primary and was sworn in as the District 58 State Representative on November 2, 2017. As the District 58 State Representative, Representative Brass has represented the residents of Ascension, St. John, St. James, and Iberville Parishes. Representative Brass has been appointed to serve as a member of the House of Representatives Leadership Team for the 2024 – 2028 Term. His leadership roles include serving as Vice Chairman of the Louisiana House of Representatives Ways and Means Tax and Capital Outlay Committee. Also, Representative Brass has the honor of serving on the House of Representatives Education and Retirement Committees.

Over the years, Representative Brass has served on many local, regional, state, and national boards and commissions, such as the Louisiana Democratic State Central Committee. In 2017, Representative Brass was inducted as a member of the Metro Baton Rouge Chapter of the National 100 Black Men Organization of America, which is known for mentoring programs that promote education, health and wellness, economic development, and leadership development. Recently, Representative Brass was recognized as the “Legislator of the Year” by the Louisiana School Board Association, the “Legislator of the Year” by the Fifth Circuit Judges Association, and awarded the Joe D. May “Excellence in Public Policy” Award by the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.

In March of 2024, Representative Brass was appointed by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, to serve on the White House Council on Environmental Quality Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Sequestration Task Force.

Representative Brass is a resident of Vacherie, Louisiana, and has a daughter, Kenzi Nicole Brass, who currently attends Howard University in Washington, D.C.
